Land Rover have clearly improved their reliability over the last few years, thanks to Tata’s massive injection of investment no doubt, meaning you won’t have to fear a big bill at MOT time these days. That should stop the jokes on Top Gear at least!

Also worth noting that Hyundai and Suzuki make the list but their owners only seem to do low mileage, less than 8000 per year, compared to Audi and Land Rover drivers who are doing closer to 12000 per year, 50% more. Factoring that in would put Audi at the top, although if you’ve got an old A6 like me you’ll enjoy it failing its MOT with worn suspension arms every 2 years, grrrr.

Looking at individual models, for first-MOT-failure-free motoring the top 3 best-performers are:

  1. Toyota IQ – 91.8 pass rate, avg mileage 20,235
  2. Honda Jazz – 90.4% pass rate, avg mileage 19,541
  3. Honda CR-V – 89.8% pass rate, avg mileage 30,848

Again the top two are characterised by very low average mileage, so no wonder they have high pass rates! It would be interesting to see the data on MOT pass rates for older cars as a better guide to long-term reliability.
