New MOT Checks for 2013

In March 2013 some new checks have been added to the MOT Test which we expect to catch many people out, as they are things which previously have been advisory only and are now causes for MOT failure:

The biggest one is probably: “The vehicle will also fail if a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp indicates a system malfunction.” – in other words, if you have an airbag warning light lit up on your dash then this is now an MOT fail.

This is also true for other warning lights for headlights, electronic power steering, brake fluid level, tyre pressure (TPMS), seat belt pre-tensioners, ABS or Electronic Stability Control. So the more clever warning systems your car has the more chance it has now of failing the MOT.

Other new checks from March 2013 include:

  • Electronic parking brake
  • Steering lock
  • Power steering fluid levels
  • Wiring and battery
  • Engine mounts
  • Driver’s seat adjustment mechanism
  • Rear doors
  • Towbars
  • Fuel pipes
  • Speedometer

So – sorry if we have to fail your car for something on this list that may have been only an advisory last time.

If you have one of these warning lights showing up it makes sense to bring your car to us now, or well in advance of the MOT, because once it’s been MOT failed you can’t really drive it until the repair’s been done. It’s way more convenient to do it now.

The actual VOSA inspection manual can be read online here http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4i00000101.htm – new checks are marked with a vertical black line.
